We have learned that combining native cartilage cells and allogeneic MSCs can be a good partnership. We consider the transplant successful if the joint is still viable in 13 to 20 years. Some people use colchicine, fish oil, or vitamin D for OA, but experts do not recommend these either, as they have not shown benefits in scientific studies. In addition, colchicine may have adverse side effects like diarrhea and vomiting. The ACR/AF do not recommend massage, manual therapy, or the use of transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) for OA of the knee. The research has not shown that these alternative therapies are beneficial.
Dealing with knee pain can significantly impact one’s quality of life, making everyday activities a challenge. Luckily, advancements in medical technology have led to innovative treatments that can help manage and alleviate knee pain effectively.
This study is publicly funded by the Gesellschaft für Forschungsförderung Niederösterreich m.b.H, Austria (Life Science Call 2020, LSC20-017). The funding organisation has no influence on the design, collection, analysis and interpretation of data, or the writing of the manuscript. The consortium has agreed on authorship guidelines [86], scientific and general dissemination activities in relevant scientific and clinical fields. Nonadherence data will be analysed by the intention to treat (ITT) method [84]. For handling missing data, multiple imputation will be performed [85].
While there is no cure for arthritis, various nonsurgical treatments are available for knee arthritis. Other research has investigated alternative therapeutic approaches for people with knee OA, such as mind-body exercises, some types of yoga, and tai chi. Some people may need more support than others in maintaining a moderate weight, as some activities could lead to further flares of symptoms or worsening of a person’s general health. In these cases, a person may benefit from weight counseling from a healthcare professional. The muscles surrounding the knee joint may absorb any shock that activities place on the joint. Excess weight may add further pressure to the joint during activity.
Physical Therapy
The Arthritis Foundation indicates that although at least 54 million Americans have been diagnosed with arthritis by a physician, the number is likely underestimated. Though there is no cure, there are measures to prevent and ease the pain.
It most commonly develops in the knee joints, though the ankles, hips, and wrists are also sometimes affected. While there are more than 100 types of arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA) is the one that most often affects the knee. OA is also most likely in adults over 50 years of age and is known as a “wear-and-tear” type of arthritis, where joint damage occurs from knee cartilage breaking down. Here’s what to know about the potential causes of joint pain in the knee, as well as the symptoms and treatment options.
One common approach to treating knee pain is through physical therapy. Physical therapists can create customized exercise programs aimed at strengthening the muscles around the knee joint, improving flexibility, and reducing pain. These exercises can also help improve mobility and prevent further injury.
Before treatment, patients had a mean baseline VAS of 8.58 and a mean baseline WOMAC of 66.6. After treatment, all study participants experienced a statistically significant reduction in pain. The mean VAS of 8.58 decreased to 5.02, while the mean WOMAC score decreased from 66.6 to 41.
Bracing
Using a knee brace or support can provide stability and reduce strain on the knee joint. Braces come in various designs, from simple sleeves to more complex hinged braces. They can help alleviate pain and improve function, especially during physical activity.
Injections
For those with more severe knee pain, injections may be recommended. Corticosteroid injections can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain in the short term. Another option is hyaluronic acid injections, which can help lubricate the joint and reduce friction, providing long-term pain relief.
Surgery
In cases where other treatments have been ineffective, surgery may be necessary. Advances in surgical techniques, such as arthroscopic surgery and total knee replacement, have made these procedures safer and more effective than ever before. Surgical options should be considered only after consulting with a healthcare professional.
Conclusion
Overall, there are many treatment options available for individuals dealing with knee pain. Whether through physical therapy, bracing, injections, or surgery, it is essential to work with a healthcare provider to determine the best course of action for your specific situation. With the latest advancements in knee pain treatment, relief is possible, allowing individuals to regain mobility and live a fuller, more active life.
